Plastic Pollution Texas is a grassroot
s organization committed to enhancing the scenic waterways, highways, streets, and recreation areas of Texas by reducing the use of plastic, encouraging consumers to recycle and formulating policy for producers to take responsibility for the end-of-life for their products. Plastic Pollution Texas is an educational forum to unite residents in Texas for the purpose of improving recycling efforts, diverting recyclables from our landfills, and reducing debris in waterways and on public land.
According to the Container Recycling Institute, the U.S. wastes approximately 877 plastic water bottles every second, 52,620 every minute, and well over 3 million every hour. Recycling just one ton of that waste saves landfills 7.4 cubic yards of space and taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars each year in disposal and litter cleanup costs. In addition to switching from plastic bags and bottles to reusable materials and other similar practices, another method for achieving these goals is to put a financial incentive on recycling. Our current legislation is doing just that.
The Recycling Refund on Beverage Containers (Texas Bottle Bill)
This legislation will put a small deposit on beverage containers, such as water bottles or soda cans, and when the consumer brings back the containers for recycling they will receive their deposit back in full. Our bill was filed March 3, 2011 and has been assigned to the Committee on Environmental Regulation in the House and the Finance Committee in the Senate. Make sure to check out Texas Bottle Bill for more updates. You can also follow the House bill here and the Senate bill here.
